Portrait Under Flat Light

In this demo, I’ll be painting a portrait under soft, diffused light—light that doesn’t create clearly defined shadow and light shapes. Without strong contrast, the usual structure we rely on becomes much less obvious. Instead, the painting depends on subtle color relationships and a compressed range of values. This creates a different kind of challenge: how do we build form when the light isn’t doing the work for us? In this session, I’ll show you how to create the illusion of form under these conditions—how to use delicate shifts of color temperature, color saturation, value, and edges to suggest structure, depth, and presence, even when everything appears quiet and understated. Happy Painting! Happy Learning! Included in this Lesson: 2 Part instructional videos - Total Duration: Over 3 hours long Unlimited access to the video
