Before She Looks Up

"Before She Looks Up" is a lesson on portrait painting. I chose this reference for it presents a different set of tasks to solve than my prior lessons. The model is looking down - her head is almost in profile but not quite, and her chin is tacked in, so there is a bit of foreshortening as well. She is dressed in a dark coat, which is so fun to paint. In my commentaries I talk about sequences of edges, how edges dynamically change from soft to hard, lost to found. I also talk about painter’s eye vs critic’s eye and coach you on the set of questions to ask when you are coming back to your paintings for the second layer. There is so much more.
