Light and Color on Dark Value Skin Model

This is an edited recording of my live demonstration focused on how to paint a dark-value skin model and make the portrait look luminous and vibrant with color. I discuss how light behaves on darker skin surfaces, the importance of maintaining low contrast between light and shadow shapes, and relying instead on highlights that can carry bold, even irreverent color. I demonstrate how to begin a portrait with a strong overall impression—avoiding early focus on small details—and how to build clear relationships between light and dark shapes through edge control and confident, descriptive brushstrokes. This video is preceded by an informative slide lecture and followed by Part II, which focuses on finishing the painting. Suitable for all levels. Happy Painting! Happy Learning!
