This edited version of a Live Demonstration includes Part I, covering the block-in process, followed by Part II, recorded the next day as I completed a child's portrait. In Part I, I focus on thinking structurally—using straight lines to identify where planes shift and seeing the three-dimensional form through those moving planes. We work with big, simple shapes, economical values, temperature shifts, and sequential edge changes, from hard to soft and lost to found, to build and turn the form. Part II focuses on the second layer: re-evaluating and refining the relationships established in the first layer. Once the larger value and color statements are in place, we develop more nuanced passages while also subtracting, simplifying, and removing anything unnecessary to strengthen the overall structure. Throughout both parts, I share the thinking behind each decision, including the mistakes, adjustments, and discoveries that are part of the painting process. Happy Painting! Happy Learning!
