Painting Is Sculpting

This video is a complete redo of my live stream demonstration on the topic “Painting is Sculpting.” It’s part of a two-part series that explores the sculptural approach to painting. Part One is a slideshow presentation in which I outline the key differences between linear and sculptural approaches to realistic painting. Part Two video begins with a review of brush handling, which is fundamental to sculptural painting. How you hold and move the brush directly affects the nature of your brushstrokes—an essential aspect of this technique. I also discuss how painting sculpturally requires a shift in mindset: a new way of seeing, interpreting, and translating visual information into the expressive language of paint. In this video, I demonstrate how to begin a portrait without relying on drawing. Instead, I start by blocking in abstract shapes. As the painting develops, I gradually carve out the features using light, value, color, edges, brushwork, and paint quality—tools that together create the illusion of space and form. This method stands in contrast to the traditional linear approach, where the portrait is first fully drawn and then painted in. Happy Painting! Happy Learning!
