This video lesson is part of my series on backgrounds where I share my own opinions and understanding of art and art history. Ultimately, we’re looking to answer an important question: What makes a good background in a painting? We start our journey by exploring the definition, functions and development of backgrounds through history. Then, we look at comparison of different artists’ solutions — examining how their choices in backgrounds support the intent of the painting and align with their personal style. And, we compare and contrast different concepts for backgrounds, such as unity versus separation, pattern versus flatness, cool versus warm backgrounds, and more. We also look at how contemporary artists approach backgrounds in a modern, highly personal way—often breaking away from tradition and the rules of realism. I warmly welcome your feedback. I hope you enjoy it! Happy painting! Happy learning! Included in this lesson: 1 Instructional Video - Total Duration: 1 hr Unlimited access to the lesson.
